Bernard Dunstan, RA RWA NEAC
Bernard Dunstan was born in Teddington, Middlesex on 19 January 1920, and educated at St Paul’s School, London. He studied at the Byam Shaw School of Art under Ernest Jackson (1939) and at the Slade School of Art (1939-1941).
Brought up in Degas-Sickert-Vuillard tradition, he established himself with intimate figure subjects and views of Venice which he exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy and other leading institutions; he also had regular solo shows at Roland, Browse and Delbanco (and, more recently, at Agnews). In 1946, he was elected to the New English Art Club and, in the same year, began to teach at the West of England School of Art. At the close of the 1940’s, he was elected to the membership of the West of England Academy (and would act as its President between 1979 - 1983). Through the following two decades, he taught at a number of schools in the London area: Camberwell School of Art (1950-1964), Byam Shaw School (1953-1974), Ravensbourne Art College (1959-1964) and City and Guilds of London Art School (1964-69). Additionally, he has educated the wider public in a series of books, including Learning to Paint (1970) Painting Methods of the Impressionists (1976).
A Royal Academician for years (ARA 1959, RA 1968), he was much loved and greatly respected. He lived in Kew with his wife, a fellow painter, Diana Armfield, until he passed away on 20 August 2017.
