Conrad Theys
Conrad Theys was born in Montagu in the Little Karoo, South Africa, in 1940. Theys became the only student of the acclaimed Gregoire Boonzaier in 1969 and, in 1974, embarked on a full-time career as an artist. He also studied Graphic Art under Edwine Simon at the Ruth Prowse School of Art in Cape Town and was National President of the South African Association of Arts form 1996 to 2003. He was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of South Africa in 2004 and, in 2010, the Suid-Afrikaanse Akademie vir Wetenskap en Kuns ("South African Academy for Science and Art") awarded him with its Medal of Honour for Visual Art.
As a leading Cape Impressionist, Conrad Theys has had an important influence on the younger generation of previously disadvantaged artists in South Africa. Despite insurmountable odds, Conrad Theys has become a major artist in the post-apartheid years.
