John Kramer
John Kramer was born in Worcester, South Africa in 1946. Following school and national service he studied at the Michaelis School of Fine Art at the University of Cape Town where he won the Michaelis prize as the top student in 1968. Following university Kramer joined the advertising agency of Van Zijl & Robinson and continues to paint part time. In 1972 he started to document small town shops and corner cafes photographically to form a visual resource for his paintings. In 1977 he was appointed head of the Design Department at the South African Museum where he displayed his art since 1970 and in 1983 he became the head of the Exhibition Department. He also became a member of the Artists’ Guild in Cape Town in 1980.
Kramer’s first solo exhibition was at the South African Association of Arts in Cape Town in 1981 which was followed by a second solo exhibition in 1988 and finally in 2002 he started painting full time. A book of Kramer’s works was published in 2014. He is married with two sons and lives in Cape Town, South Africa.
